The first phase of a National Demonstration programme (NDP) that is investigating how wastewater treatment works (WwTW) might be built and operated to reduce the concentration of EDCs in UK rivers has been completed. The National Demonstration Programme has resulted in the production of an extensive and valuable body of robust data regarding the occurrence, treatment and release of various endocrine disrupting compunds from conventional WwTW. This work has allowed the water companies to satisfy their AMP 4 obligations by gathering this important information which will contribute to future discussions on treatment options. Moreover, by carrying out the work collaboratively through UKWIR, they have avoided the need to fund separate work programmes and thereby yielded valuable efficiencies.
